Presented by Associate Professor Alka Saxena, Director of Genomics WA, as part of The Kids Research Seminar Series on 5 August 2026.

Genomics is moving rapidly beyond conventional short-read sequencing towards technologies that provide greater resolution across genomes, transcriptomes and epigenomes. This presentation explores how long-read sequencing, single-cell and spatial approaches, multiomic profiling and artificial intelligence are expanding the biological questions researchers can address.

The session examines emerging applications across DNA and RNA sequencing, isoform-level analysis, spatial transcriptomics, high-resolution epigenomics, clinical genomics and population-scale research. It also highlights how Genomics WA is developing and applying these capabilities through platforms including PacBio Vega, Oxford Nanopore ElysION, Illumina sequencing systems and 10x Genomics technologies.
